Fingertip unlocks doors -  Keeping your Victoria Real Estate Safe.

Technology scans your prints to let you in.

A recent article in the Times Colonist reads; The same sophisticated technology used in advanced security screening is coming to a household door near you.

Weiser Lock’s new SmartScan keyless entry system uses biometrics, the ability of machines to scan and recognize human features such as fingerprints. SmartScan eliminates the need for a key or key code by using a fingerprint scan.

The deadbolt system, which can be used on inside and outside doors, is activated by swiping a fingertip across its sensor. SmartScan reads sub dermal fingerprint patterns beneath the outer surface layer of the skin, even through dirty or worn fingertips, the manufacturer says.

Each lock can be programmed to accept as many as 50 fingerprints. SmartScan also has a timed lockout feature that allows homeowners three levels of security: continuous access for family members, temporary access for house sitters or contractors, and time-restricted access for babysitters or housekeepers.

“Consumer acceptance of biometric technology is accelerating,” says Mark Wallace, Canadian marketing manager for Weiser Lock. “It is currently available on portable hard drives and IBM ThinkPad computers, as well as in grocery store checkouts, gas stations and automobiles. Biometrics is an emerging technology that can give consumers an increased level of home protection and peace of mind.”

SmartScan technology locks can be installed on most standard doors and requires no hard wiring. The low power-consumption system operates on a battery with a life of one year (based on 20 accesses per day). The locks, which are sold at such hardware outlets as Home Depot, come in a variety of finishes for about $199 each. that enhances any decor in any home. So all of this technology comes to you in the distinct styles and finishes that you’ve come to expect from Weiser Lock. End of Article.

We have used a similar system for our home here in Victoria and for our Vacation Rental Property on Cortes Island. The lock we use is with a combination you punch in and you don’t need a key. The combination locks can be set with two different combinations.
